# Quill content writer

> Research, create, edit, optimize, and publish SEO- and GEO-ready content.

**Quill** is Cleo's long-form AI content workspace. Use it to research, generate, edit, optimize, approve, and publish articles for the active site.

## Open Quill

1. Open the site workspace.
2. Choose **Studio → Quill**.

## Choose a mode: SEO or GEO

When you start a new piece, Quill asks whether you're writing for **SEO** or **GEO**:

* **SEO mode** — content optimised to rank in traditional search.
* **GEO mode** — content structured to be cited and recommended by AI answer engines.

The form fields differ slightly between the two modes, as described below.

## SEO mode — the Create Content form

### Required

* **Topic / Title** — the title of the article (or a topic Cleo will turn into a title).
* **Article Length** — Short, Medium, Long, or Extra Long.
* **Tone of Writing** — for example Professional, Warm.
* **Goal of Article** — for example Educate, Inform, Persuade, Convert.
* **Brand Voice** — a brand voice must be set before you can generate (see below).
* **Content Sections** — pick at least **3** (see below).

### Optional SEO inputs

* **Competitor Blog URLs** — paste URLs of competing articles for Quill to consider.
* **Target Keywords** — type each keyword and press Enter. Quill can also suggest keywords.
* **Knowledge Base** — add facts, specs, or research Cleo should ground the article in.

### Content Sections

The Content Sections panel controls which sections appear. Select at least **3**. Options include **Introduction**, **Key Takeaways**, **FAQs**, **Conclusion**, **Pros & Cons**, **CTAs**, and **Tables**. The panel shows a counter so you know when you've met the minimum.

## GEO mode — the Create Content form

GEO mode shares the core fields (Topic / Title, Article Length, Tone, Brand Voice, Knowledge Base, Target Keywords) and adds:

* **GEO Target Query** — the AI-engine query you want this content to win (Cleo can infer one if you leave it blank).
* **Brand Name** — inferred from your domain by default.
* **GEO Content Elements** — pick at least **2** of the structures that make content citable by AI engines: **Answer-First Structure**, **Statistics & Citations**, **Expert Quotations**, **FAQ Section + Schema**, **Entity Schema**, **Comparison Tables**, and **How-To Steps**.

## Brand Voice

The **Brand Voice** panel shows the voice traits Quill will write in — for example *authoritative*, *confident*, *3rd person*. A brand voice is **required** before you generate, so the draft sounds like your brand. You can **edit** the active voice or **replace** it with a different profile. Set this up before generating your first article.

## Knowledge Base

The **Knowledge Base** is where you add facts, specs, or research the AI doesn't already know about your business or product. Click **Add knowledge** to upload or paste reference material. Quill uses it to ground the article in your specifics.

## Generate the article

1. Pick **SEO** or **GEO** mode.
2. Fill in **Topic / Title** and the required fields.
3. Confirm a **Brand Voice** is set.
4. Pick your **Content Sections** (SEO, min 3) or **GEO Content Elements** (GEO, min 2).
5. (Optional) Add **Target Keywords**, **Competitor Blog URLs**, and **Knowledge Base** material.
6. Click **Generate Article** (SEO) or **Generate GEO Content** (GEO). Use **Reset** to clear the form.

The draft opens in the editor for review.

## Editing the draft

Once a draft is generated you can edit any section directly, reorder or add/remove sections, and re-run generation with different settings if it isn't right.

## Publish

When the draft is ready:

1. Click **Publish**.
2. Cleo publishes to your connected **WordPress** site. Review the publish settings (slug, categories, tags, schedule) and confirm.

If WordPress isn't connected, you can **export** the content and paste it into your CMS manually. See [WordPress and Wix](/integrations/wordpress-wix).

## Tips for strong content

1. Write a clear, specific **Topic / Title**.
2. Add **Target Keywords** (SEO) or a focused **GEO Target Query** (GEO) that match real intent.
3. In SEO mode, add a couple of **Competitor Blog URLs** so Quill can position against them.
4. Pick an **Article Length** that suits the topic — Long/Extra Long for definitive guides, Short for simple posts.
5. Choose sections/elements that match the search or answer intent.
6. Make sure **Brand Voice** is set.
7. Generate, review, edit, and publish.

## Plan limits

Quill article counts per month depend on your plan. See [Plans and billing](/account/plans-billing).

## Troubleshooting

* **Generate button is disabled:** check that you've filled in **Topic / Title**, set a **Brand Voice**, and selected enough Content Sections (3 in SEO) or GEO Content Elements (2 in GEO).
* **Generation fails:** retry, or simplify the topic / shorten the requested length.
* **Publish fails:** confirm the destination connection under **Resources → Integrations** and try again.
