Connecting your CMS lets Cleo apply many fixes directly: meta tags, schema, alt text, internal links, content publishing, and more. Without a connection, Cleo still produces all the recommendations and copy-ready markup — you just have to paste it in yourself.

WordPress

What you need

  • Your WordPress site URL.
  • A WordPress username with permission to edit content.
  • That user’s password. An application password (created from inside WordPress) is recommended — it’s more secure than your main password and works in the same field.
  1. In WordPress, open Users → your profile.
  2. Scroll to Application Passwords.
  3. Enter a name like “Cleo” and click Add New Application Password.
  4. WordPress generates a long string. Copy it now — you will not see it again.

Connect WordPress in Cleo

  1. Open the site’s Settings → WordPress Credentials.
  2. Enter:
    • Website URL (for example, https://example.com).
    • WordPress Username.
    • WordPress Password (your account password, or the application password from above).
  3. Click Save Credentials. Cleo validates the connection as it saves and tells you if anything is wrong.

What Cleo can do once WordPress is connected

  • Apply meta titles and descriptions.
  • Update canonical tags and robots directives.
  • Apply image alt text.
  • Insert and update internal links.
  • Add and update schema (JSON-LD).
  • Publish drafts from the Block Editor / Quill workflow.
  • Apply the generated thank-you and 404 pages.

WordPress backup

Cleo includes a WordPress Backup tool. Use it to take a snapshot of your site’s content before applying large batches of changes:
  1. Open WordPress Backup.
  2. Confirm the connected site.
  3. Choose what to back up (content, settings, etc.).
  4. Click Run Backup.
  5. The backup is stored and can be reviewed or restored from the same screen.
Take a backup before bulk changes — for example, before applying a batch of internal-link or schema fixes across many pages.

Troubleshooting WordPress

  • Saving fails / connection invalid: double-check the website URL (with https://), the username, and the password. Paste, don’t retype, an application password.
  • Apply actions fail: confirm the user has permission to edit posts and pages, and that the WordPress REST API is enabled.
  • Application passwords disabled: some hosts disable application passwords. Re-enable them or ask your host. Some security plugins also block REST API requests; you may need to allow Cleo. Certain Apply actions also rely on common plugins (for example a redirects or code-snippets plugin) — Cleo will tell you if one is missing.

Wix

Cleo provides a set of tools to manage Wix sites: page edits, SEO updates, and content publishing.

What you need

  • Your Wix API Key — found in your Wix Dashboard under Settings → API Key.
  • Your Wix Site ID — found in your Wix Dashboard under Settings → Site ID.
  • (Optional) your Wix Account ID.

Connect Wix

  1. Open Resources → Integrations and select Wix.
  2. Enter your Wix API Key, Wix Site ID, and (optionally) your Account ID. The website URL is filled in for you.
  3. Save.

What Cleo can do once Wix is connected

  • Update page titles, meta descriptions, and other SEO settings.
  • Optimise URLs and manage redirects.
  • Apply internal-linking suggestions.
(Quill content is published to WordPress; for Wix, export the content and add it in Wix.)

Troubleshooting Wix

  • Authorisation failed: make sure the Wix account you authorised has permission to manage the site.
  • Apply actions fail: confirm the page exists and is editable in Wix. Some templates restrict programmatic edits.

Using Cleo without a CMS connection

Most analyses still work without a connection. The difference is the apply step:
  • Without a connection, Cleo gives you the exact markup, snippet, or instructions to paste into your site.
  • With a connection, Cleo can push the change directly.
You can connect a CMS later — your previous analysis history and tasks are preserved.
